There is never an end to the debate between Dota 2 and League of Legends, with community members and players offering their opinions on a regular basis. Janne “Gorgc” Stefanovski, a popular Dota 2 livestreamer, gave a pretty fair assessment of the two games and their developers – Valve for Dota 2 and Riot Games for League of Legends. Despite the fact that Dota 2 is a better game, Gorgc believes Riot Games has made better efforts to minimize betting sponsors, curate content, and promote League of Legends. The animes of the two games were also compared, with Gorgc stating that League of Legends’ Arcane took much longer to make than Dota’s Dragon’s Blood due to its high production ceiling.
Gorgc believes Riot Games does a better job at marketing League of Legends despite Dota 2 being a better game
During his Twitch livestream on 14th Sept, in response to a question from a viewer, Gorgc stated that Dota 2 is a better game when compared with League of Legends, but Riot produces more content and cares more about the game, in addition to being more accessible to new players. He added that Valve puts in little effort into Dota 2.
“I think yes, objectively, also yes. But League is just more accessible for new players so in some ways, no. I think League also has some cool shit going for them that we don’t. For instance, LCS, their TI thing, they banned all crypto and gambling sponsors. Meanwhile, here for TI, we are having risk free bets right on the f***ing screen. It’s kinda chad on them to ban those, you know. I can respect that because there are a lot of kids watching League as well.
And I think, honestly, the game itself, the developers care more than Dota. It’s just a feeling. They care more about promoting the game, making content around the game, and whatnot. Dota feels way more low effort, overall. But the game itself, you know, you just look at Dota as a free game, I think it’s better. Dota is in beta guys, when they’ll release the thing, you’ll see.”
Moreover, Gorgc pointed out that the in-game content in Dota 2 is even more expensive than not only League of Legends but also gambling since players must spend a great deal of money in order to get a chance at rare items.
“In League, you can buy the skin you want for a few bucks instead of gambling 1000 Euros to open loot boxes? You know what the shame about Dota 2 loot boxes are? It’s not even gambling, that’s the worse part. It’s worse than gambling. You actually have to buy like – 50 chests to have a chance to even get the rare ones.”
Despite the anime for Dota 2 being released before League of Legends, Gorgc said Arcane was conceptualized and planned much earlier. Besides this, in spite of acknowledging that it is League who copies aspects of other games, he has no problem with it as long as it is done well.
“I think League made their anime first, before Dota. I know it sounds ridiculous, I mean it’s not that ridiculous but the League one took years to make, like way more time than the Dota one, I am fairly sure. That’s a really high production anime. Those things take years to animate, pretty sure League started it first. In most things, yeah League copied but f**k it, I am not against copying, just do it good and you can copy whatever kinda, you know what I mean… If they decided to copy a few HoN heroes, I’d be happy. Who the f**k is going to be salty about that?”
As the conversation ended, Gorgc, however, also noted that Valve has a hard time promoting Dota 2 due to the fact that it is not “noob friendly.” It is harder for new players to get used to it, which might not provide Valve with the return on investment it seeks.
